Freshman Michelle
Montilio scored her first-career goal to give the
American University women's soccer team a 1-0 at Lafayette on
Friday night. With the win, the Eagles improve to 4-1 in the
Patriot League, remain atop the conference standings and clinch a
berth into the four-team Patriot League Tournament.
On a cold and rainy night in Easton, Pa., Montilio's goal in the
22nd minute was all the offense American (9-8, 4-1 PL) needed to
come away with the important road victory. The goal came off a
corner kick when senior Kelsey
Brasher fed a pass to the midfielder Montilio, who put
the shot past Lafayette goalkeeper Lauren Smedley.
AU goalkeeper Arianna
Efstathiou made four saves in goal to earn the
shutout, her fifth of the season.
Both teams recorded eight shots, while Lafayette (3-11-2, 0-5
PL) held a slight 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman
Jasmine
Mohandesi recorded two shots on goal for the Eagles.
"Every game in the Patriot League is tough, especially on the
road," commented American Head Coach David
Bucciero. "Lafayette did a good job of pressing us in
the second half. It's nice to come away with three points, and we
look forward to facing Lehigh on Sunday."
With the victory, American remains tied for first place in the
Patriot League with a 4-1 record. Additionally, the win guarantees
the Eagles a berth into the four-team conference tournament, which
will be played from November 6-8 at the site of the regular season
champion.
The Eagles will play their final regular season road game of the
season on Sunday, October 25, when they visit Lehigh. Match time is
set for 1 p.m.
