WASHINGTON - The American University men's and women's indoor track teams began their portion of the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Bucknell's Gerhard Fieldhouse, scoring in each of the three events they entered. Junior Carlos Jamieson earned AU's first victory at this year's championships with a win in the 5000 meter run while the men's and women's 4x800 meter relay teams placed sixth and fourth, respectively.

The PL Championships began yesterday in Lewisburg, Pa., but the Eagles did not enter any of Day One's. Leading off for AU on Saturday were Jamieson and classmate Brandon Laks in the 5000 meter run. Jamieson entered the race as the second seed behind Army's Jonathon Anderson but blew his competition away, posting a season best time of 14:29.82 for first place. Jamieson's win is the first PL Championship of his career. Anderson, who placed second, finished nearly four seconds behind Jamieson.

Laks placed eighth in the event with a season best time of 15:13.62 but did not score.

The women's 4x800 meter relay team was next to take the track for AU comprised of Melissa Tabas, Cathleen Ford, Mary Jane Egan and Kate Lilley. The four Eagles combined for a finals time of 9:20.14 to place fourth. Bucknell won the event in a time of 9:08.11.

The men's 4x800 meter relay team returned two members of last year's record setting championship team in Steve Hallinan and Brian McCabe. Hallinan and McCabe, who ran the third and fourth legs, respectively, were joined on the track by leadoff man Dan King and second leg Brendan Fennell. The Eagles placed sixth in the event with a time of 7:40.50 while Navy won in a time of 7:36.58.

After two days of competition the men's and women's teams sit in fourth and eighth place, respectively, with 11 points and four points. Navy currently leads the men's competition with 63.5 points while Bucknell leads on the women's side with 60 points.

The PL Indoor Track and Field Championships will conclude tomorrow, Feb. 24, at Gerhard Fieldhouse. The Eagles are entered in six of Sunday's events including the mile run where Fennell, Hallinan and McCabe will look to repeat their 1-2-3 finish from last year's championships.
