PRINCETON, N.J. - The No. 19 American
University field hockey team could not hold on to a first half
lead, and fell to No. 11 Princeton on Sunday in its regular season
finale. Megan
Henry scored a goal and assist in the contest for the Eagles,
who will now begin preparation for the Patriot League Tournament.
As the host and top-seed, American (10-7) will play the fourth
seed, Colgate, on Friday at 11 a.m. at Jacobs Field.
Princeton (14-2) opened the scoring just over a minute into the
game when Katie Kinzer gave a pass to Candice Arner, who beat
American keeper Alyssa Poorman for
the score. Despite the early goal, the Eagles settled into the game
and were able to tally an equalizer at 26:22 when Henry fed a pass
to Emily
Stovicek, who was able to tip a shot over Tigers goalie
Jennifer King.
The Eagles would claim the lead just minutes before the end of
the first half on a Megan Henry goal. Irene
Schickhardt was credited with the assist and American would
take a 2-1 lead into the break, despite being outshot by a 7-4
margin.
Princeton had an offensive outpour in the second half, recording
four unanswered goals to overcome the deficit and claim the
victory. Kraftin Schreyer got things started at 38:08 off a penalty
corner to even the score at 2-2. Christina Bortz got on the
scoresheet at 58:13 to reclaim the Tigers lead and goals by
Kathleen Sharkey and Kinzer sealed the 5-2 final.
"Princeton is a great team and performed very well today," said
AU head coach Steve Jennings.
"We had some strong moments in the first half, but ultimately did
not put enough consistancy together to get the result. We now turn
our attention to the Patriot League Tournament and a tough Colgate
squad."
The Tigers held a 24-5 advantage in shots and a 12-2 margin in
penalty corners. Poorman finished with 11 saves for American and
King had two stops for Princeton.
