SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Irene
Schickhardt scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season,
but it was not enough, as the No. 20 American University field
hockey team fell to No. 2 Syracuse by a 3-1 score on Sunday at J.S.
Coyne Stadium. The game marked the sixth time this season that the
Eagles played a team ranked in the top-20 in the country.
Syracuse broke the scoreless tie at 20:05 when Lindsey Conrad
scored her first of two goals on the day, unassisted, to give the
Orange a 1-0 lead. Conrad struck again at 58:12 on another
unassisted tally to up the lead to 2-0. Martina Loncarica added an
insurance goal at 68:57, as it appeared Syracuse would go on to
earn a 3-0 win, however, American tallied at 69:59, just before
time expired. Irene
Schickhardt scored on an assist from Anne van Erp to ruin
the Orange shutout and post a 3-1 final.
"Syracuse is a good team," said AU associate head coach Sarah
Krombolz. "We had a strong first half but mentally made a few
mistakes, which allowed them into the game. I am proud of our
effort and we will look to build on this weekend's games as we have
two strong opponents next weekend."
Syracuse had an 18-8 advantage in shots and an 8-4 margin in
penalty corners. Alyssa Poorman
made five saves in goal for the Eagles, while Heather Hess stopped
four shots for the Orange. Schickhardt led all players with seven
shots in the game.
American will return to conference action on Saturday when they
host Bucknell at 11 a.m. on Jacobs Field.
