COLLEGE PARK - Savannah Graybill converted on an Eagle penalty corner with no time left in regulation to lead No. 12 American University field hockey to the 1-0 victory over Northeastern and its fifth straight win of the season.
After dominating 9-1 in penalty corners, AU was able to capitalize on what it knew would be its final chance of the afternoon after earning a corner with less than five seconds remaining. Irene Schickhardt (Ludwigsburg, Germany/Schiller) inserted the ball to Denise Infante (Santiago, Chile/Santiago), who fired a shot to the far post. On a diving save, Huskie goalkeeper Liz Centofanti sent the ball right back into action, with the Eagles crashing the circle. Savannah Graybill (Ephrata, Pa./Cocalico) was there for the follow up, netting the game-winner in dramatic fashion and registering her third goal of the season.
The two teams ended the first half tied, with sophomore Alyssa Poorman (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South) coming up big several times. With just under two minutes remaining, Poorman made two stops to keep the score locked at zero. AU carried the momentum into the second half on both ends of the turf, holding the 12-2 advantage over Northeastern in shots. The Huskies had their best chance of the game with 22:04 remaining in the final frame, but again Poorman was there for the Eagles, making a diving save to lead her to her third shutout of the season.
No.12 American University women's field hockey extends its win streak to five, while Northeastern falls to 1-2 on the season. The Eagles wrap up the Terrapin Invitational on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Ohio State.
