WASHINGTON -
Senior Awit Yohannes and sophomore Carlos Jamieson each won an individual event as American University track and field athletes earned seven top-ten finishes Saturday at the Maryland Invitational.
Running a personal best for the 800, Jamieson led an AU 1-3-4 finish. The AU sophomore ran 1:53.35 for first with teammates Brendan Fennell and Conor Lanz steps back in 1:53.77 and 1:54.06. Jamieson's time was the ninth-fastest in school history while Fennell ran an open personal best of almost two seconds.
AU's other win came from Yohannes in the 1500m. As a native of Maryland, Yohannes represented his home state well, winning the 1500m title at the Terrapin Invitational for the second straight year. His time of 3:54.89 is a season-best. In his return to racing since suffering an ankle injury at the Patriot League Indoor Championships, Steve Hallinan took third. In addition, freshman Doug Swiatocha ran a personal best 4:08.90 just a tick ahead of fellow Eagle Brandon Lakes in 4:09.00.
For the women's team, Cathleen Ford continued her solid outdoor season. In the 1500m, Ford ran 4:46.92 for sixth. Her time was just a second off the personal best she ran last week. Also in that race, Meghan Mason ran a personal best 4:55.24 for 19th, a few strides behind freshman Greta Wicklund who placed 17th.
The women's 800 featured numerous Eagles headlined by freshman Mercedes Ball, who ran a personal best 2:19.92 - the fifth-fastest time in school history. Fellow frosh Danielle Loughrey ran 2:25.16 for 27th - a time that would have placed her in the AU all-time top-ten had it not been for the strong running of her teammate.
AU senior Christina Wright threw the discus 31.20m - just a few feet off her personal best set last week.
American's squad will split up next weekend as the Eagles' elite men head to the Texas Relays, while the rest of the team will compete at either the Duke or Princeton Invitationals.
