Brendan Fennell, Steve Hallinan and Awit Yohannes each won Saturday to highlight the American University track teams' performances at the George Mason Patriot Games.
In the 1000 meters, Fennell ran away from the field to the win in 2:26.77, the fifth-fastest time in school history. It was Fennell's first attempt at the distance in college. In addition, AU junior Brian McCabe took third in 2:29.15.
In the 3000 meters, Hallinan blasted away from the field with 400 meters to go to won his fourth race of the season in the second fastest time of his career, 8:12.93. Hallinan sat on the pace through a 4:30 opener and took the lead with just under two laps to go, cruising to a 58 last 400 for the five second win.
Yohannes captured AU's other win on the day in the mile. The AU senior dominated the event, taking the lead with 700 to go and running a personal best 4:11.97, which is the tenth-fastest time in school history. Conor Lanz finished fifth in 4:17.52.
The men's team had another top-five finish from Dustin Emrani who was third in the 800 meters with a 1:57.10.
Ashley Dellinger and Cathleen Ford finished in the top-ten of their events to pace the AU women. Dellinger ran 2:22.18 in the 800, a personal best and the third-fastest time in AU history for fifth-place. Ford ran 5:11.44 in the mile an almost four second personal best and the fifth-fastest time in school history.
Freshman Danielle Loughery also etched her name in the AU record books with a 3:09.89 in 1000 meters. The time was good for tenth in the race and sixth in the AU record books.
American has a big week ahead of them as they race at the Millrose Games and the Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York City, beginning next Friday.
