WASHINGTON - American University runners Steve Hallinan and Awit Yohannes earned victories in the 1000 and 3000 meter races, respectively, as the Eagle men's track team posted seven top-five finishes Saturday at the Navy Invitational.

Hallinan utilized quick pacemaking from teammate Alex Caudana and took the lead with just over a lap to go for the win in 2:27.55 - a personal best and the sixth-fastest time in school history. Caudana held on for second-place in 2:28.67 just a tenth of a second off his personal best.

Yohannes used a similar strategy in the 3000, tucking himself behind the early leaders from VCU and Navy then taking the lead for good with three laps to go. His time of 8:26.07 was more than three seconds ahead of the runner-up.

American got other top finishes in the 800, mile and 5000 meter races. Senior captain Dustin Emrani - the defending Patriot League indoor champion - was third in his specialty, the 800, with a time of 1:55.52. In the men's mile, Brian McCabe and Brendan Fennell placed second and fourth, respectively, in times of 4:12.29 and 4:13.21. The pair did much of the pacemaking in the first half of the race through splits of 62 and 2:05, but were overtaken by trailing runners in the final 400. In the 5000, sophomore Carlos Jamieson took second in a season-best 15:02.61.

The Eagles return to the track next Saturday at the Maryland Invitational in Landover, Md.
