Field Hockey Downs Princeton, 4-1

Sept. 3, 2005

WASHINGTON - Three first half goals help propel American University's Field Hockey team to a 4-1 win over Princeton in the inaugural game at the William I Jacobs Recreational Complex.

American tallied three of it's four first goals in the first 17 minutes of play. AU freshman Irene Shickhardt (Ludwigsburg, Germany/Schiller) scored her second goal of the season just 25 seconds into the match, when she took a pass from Camila Infante (Santiago, Chile/Santiago) and beat Tiger goalie Allison Nemeth.

The Eagles' second goal came at the 11:45 mark of the game, when Camila Infante scored on a corner, assisted by Shannon Goans (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) and Schickardt, who inserted the ball to start the play.

Not content with scoring just two goals, AU continued to apply pressure in the Tiger's offensive zone, when sophomore Maggie Hall (Annville, Pa./Palmyra) gathered a pass from Camila Infante and blasted a shot to the far post that put AU up 3-0.

AU senior Maureen Daniel (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) put the Eagles up 4-0 when hammered a shot off a penalty corner insertion that ricocheted off a Princeton player and found the back of the net. With AU head coach Steve Jennings mixing in various bench players, the Tigers were able to break the shutout in the 45th minute when Lauren Ehrlichman found the left side of the net wide open.

"I am really proud of our kids for coming out and getting our first win on our new field in style," said Jennings. "It was great to have all the support from our parents, alumni and friends."

Au held a 9-8 advantage in shots in the game but the Tigers were awarded seven penalty corners, compared to the Eagles' six opportunities. AU goaltender Allison Fayfich (Wexford, Pa./N. Allegheny) made five saves in net, with Princeton's Nemeth stopping four shots.

The win marked the first time in six tries for American over the Tigers. Princeton will host Penn State at home on Wednesday.

American will look for it's fourth straight win tomorrow when they host Albany at 2 p.m.
