TOWSON, Md. - American University's women's basketball team was outscored 44-26 in the second half en route to a 67-54 loss to Towson University on Friday night.
Towson stood on the back of 17 second-half points from LaShay Rose, including five three pointers to take a five point deficit at the half and turn it into a 13 point win. The Eagles started the half with a 28-23 lead but Towson took only five minutes to tie the game at 38. The two teams traded points over the next six minutes until the Eagles took a 49-44 lead with 7:18 left in the game.
The Tigers battled back scoring seven straight points over the next three minutes mainly from Kelley Robinson. The Eagles could not recover and ended up losing by 13.
AU held a 28-23 lead going into the second half, coming back from a mid-period deficit to take the lead. The game started out with the two teams trading buckets with American holding a 13-11 lead after seven minutes being played. With the scored tied at 17, Towson popped two straight shots to take a 21-17 lead. After a seven minute scoring drought by the Eagles, freshman Nicole Ryan (Safety Harbor, Fla./Clearwater) hit five straight points, including a three-pointer to give the Eagles a one-point edge. The Eagles closed out the final minutes with a 10-2 run to finish the half with the five point lead.
Hadavi finished the game with a career-high 22 points, including three from beyond the arc. Forward Abby Lipskis (Norfolk, Va./Collegiate) had 10 points and grabbed a carreer-high 12 rebounds (6o-6d). Junior Tara Williams (Newport News, Va./Heritage) finished with nine points, while Ryan finished with eight in her first collegiate game.
Tierra Jackson finished with 21 for the Tigers, while Rose had 17. Towson scored 19 points off AU turnovers, while AU capitalized for 10 points off Tiger mistakes.
The Eagles host CAA opponent Delaware in their home opener on Sunday, Nov. 20. Gametime is set for 2 p.m.
