Women’s Hoops Picks Up Series Sweep over Colgate on the Road

HAMILTON, N.Y. –– It came down to a nail-biting final minute on Cotterell Court, but the Eagles of American University women's basketball were able to keep their composure and pull out the narrow, 44-41, victory over Colgate on the road. The Eagles, having claimed an overtime victory over the Raiders in Bender Arena two weeks prior, pick up their first series sweep of the season.

Inside the Box Score
  • Charlotte Tuhy was the star of the game once again for AU. She secured her ninth double-double and fourth in PL play with three minutes to play in the first half and went on to finish with 22 points and 17 boards to lead all players on the court in both categories.
  • Tuhy also had a career-high five blocks. The last time an Eagle had five or more blocks was Cecily Carl back in 2016; this ties Tuhy at sixth all-time for blocks in a single game.
  • American claimed the advantage points off turnovers (12-5) and in points in the paint (28-10). AU went just 2-for-23 from three point range.
  • Ella Meabon led for Colgate with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
How it Happened
  • Tuhy started the game offensively for AU before each team went on a scoring drought, the scoreline of 4-3 held from 8:28 through 4:19 before Moore-Nicholson sank a three pointer; AU went 2-for-6 and Colgate 1-for-7 to open the game before that shot went down.
  • The Eagles opened the gap over the Raiders, leading 14-6 through one. Schiller had all six points for Colgate, shooting 2-for-2 from three point range, while the rest of the team went a collective 0-for-8. Madisyn Moore-Nicholson and Tuhy had six points apiece.
  • Colgate went on a 5-0 run, but Lexi Salazar cut it with a jumper, and the Eagles were up 21-13 with 2:39 to play in the half. With her 10th rebound coming at the 2:59 mark of the second quarter, Tuhy, on 11 points, picked up her ninth double-double of the season.
  • American ran into the locker room break up 23-18 over the Raiders. Only three Eagles were in scoring position: Tuhy (13 pts), Moore-Nicholson (6), and Salazar (4). AU had a 14-6 points in the paint advantage an 8-0 points off turnovers at the halfway point.
  • Coming out of halftime, neither team was able to score from the floor in the first three minutes, Colgate breaking the stalemate with a buzzer-beating three with 6:35 to play in the third period.
  • The media timeout came with 4:55 to go, AU picking up just three points to Colgate's five, the gap closing with AU holding a narrow 26-23 lead.
  • With 10 to play, American was still maintaining their lead, up two at 30-28. The Eagles were held to their lowest-scoring quarter, picking up just seven points to the Raiders' 10.
  • Colgate tied up the game at 30-all and 8:31 to play with a pair of free throws from Schiller. American called a timeout with 7:16 to play, the score still locked at 30.
  • The Raiders grabbed their first lead of the game with seven minutes to play and immediately added to that lead, up 34-30 with six to go.
  • Laura Nogues and Tuhy combined to tie it up a 34 with 4:11 to play for. American went down twice before going back up, leading 40-39 with 1:45 to go.
  • Salazar, off an inbound, had American up one, 42-41 with 47.9 seconds left. A Tuhy basket with 13 second on the clock had American up 44-41.
  • The Eagles would hold on through a tense final minute to claim the 44-41 victory on the road and the series sweep over Colgate.
