American Field Hockey Downs Yale, 3-1

Sept. 17, 2004

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - American University's Field Hockey team improved to 5-2 overall today with a 3-1 win over Yale University at home on Friday.

The Eagles drew first blood at the 13:59 mark when Javiera Villagra (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) scored on a penalty corner. Shannon Goans (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) and Maureen Daniel (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) were credited with assists on the play. The Eagles expanded their lead to 2-0, when Daniel blasted a shot past Bulldog goaltender Kate Crandall on a penalty corner. AU's Heather Maranzano (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) and Camila Infante (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) assisted on the penalty corner goal. American took a 3-0 lead into halftime after Goans took a pass from sophomore Tiffany Carter (Yardley, Pa./Hun School of Princeton) and buried it in the Yale goal with less than six minutes remaining in the first half.

The Bulldogs continued to apply pressure in the second half, trying to come back, but the AU defense stifled the Yale attack. The Bulldogs scored their only goal of the game at the 56:32 mark when Meredith Hudson deflected the ball over AU goaltender Allison Fayfich (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) on a penalty corner. Fayfich earned her fifth win in net for the Eagles with five saves. AU outshot Yale by a 17-9 margin while holding a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners.

AU is back in action tomorrow, when they take on the 11th-ranked Richmond Spiders at the University of Maryland Field Hockey Field at 2 p.m.
