#7 Field Hockey Blanked by Maryland in NCAA Second Round, 2-0

Nov. 14, 2004

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - American University's field hockey team suffered a 2-0 loss to the Maryland Terrapins on Sunday at College Park.

The Terrapins struck first 15 minutes into the game when they were awarded a penalty corner on an AU clear attempt. On the ensuing corner, senior Sara Silvetti fired a shot that deflected high off an American defender and over goaltender Allison Fayfich (Wexford, Pa./N. Allegheny). The Terrapins expanded their lead to 2-0 with 13:30 to play in the first half when junior Lauren Powley gathered a loose ball in front of the net and buried it in the AU goal. The Eagles were able to make two runs at the Maryland net but could only muster one shot in the first half.

Maryland continued in the second half where they left off, driving down the field and getting two quality shots, both of which were saved by Fayfich. The Terrapin defense tightened in the second half, stopping AU runs just past the midfield marker.

Fayfich tallied a personal best 12 saves as the Eagles were outshot 25-1 by the Terrapins. Maryland also held a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners in the contest.

American finishes the season with a record setting 19-3 mark, with the 2004 Eagles breaking numerous team records. Maryland will meet the host Wake Forest Demon Deacons next weekend in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament.
