American Knocks Off Georgetown by three, 6-3

WASHINGTON - Camila Infante (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) scored one goal and dished out three assists to lead the Eagles to a 6-3 victory over crosstown rival Georgetown. The Eagles got off to a slow start against the Hoyas, and trailed 2-1 at the half. However, they outscored Georgetown 5-1 in the final 35 minutes to come away with the victory. Maureen Daniel (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) got things going in the second half, scoring three minutes into the half after getting an assist from both Melissa Snyder (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) and Shannon Goans (Ellicott, Md./River Hill). Both Daniel and Snyder would finish the day with a goal and assist. Later in the second half the teams would exchange goals, tying things up at three apiece. However, the Eagles scored would then score three straight times to put the game away, Freshman Heidi Hershberger (Davis, Calif./Davis) scored the gamewinner at 55:13 off an assist from Infante. Javiera Villagra (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) provided a cushion when she scored the fifth goal of the game for AU, and then Hershberger ended any doubts when she scored at 67:59. Laura Miller (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown) played well in goal. She collected four saves (all in the first half), and gave up just one goal over the last 58 minutes. American had a big edge in shots (24-9) and in penalty corners (12-4). American is now 6-1-0 and will next play Wednesday, October 1 at the University of Delaware, where they will finish the second half of the game with St. Joe's, which was interrupted due to lightning.
