WASHINGTON -- The American University men's soccer team battled Georgetown to a 1-1 draw in the final match of the 2003 D.C. College Cup. Despite playing a man up for nearly 24 minutes, the Eagles were unable to convert and tied Georgetown for only the second time ever with the last time being in 1964. Peter Philipakos scored the only goal for AU with Sean Albright posting the assist. Philipakos was joined on the D.C. College Cup All-Tournament Team by Charlie Koniver and Shawn Kuykendall.
Georgetown had the first chance of the match in the third minute as Carl Skanderup crossed the ball to Ricky Schramm who shot on goal, but Koniver deflected it and Thomas Myers then saved the ball. Just one minute later, Georgetown's Kemmons Feldman was able to fire a shot just inside the box that Myers was able to deflect away.
The Eagles finally put some pressure on the Hoyas in the ninth minute as David Marut played Philipakos through who fed Andrew Herman, but his shot was blocked. Moments later, Nick Zaron blasted a shot from 30 yards out that forced Georgetown goalkeeper Tim Hogan to make a diving save.
Georgetown's Trevor Goodrich chipped the ball in the box in the 14th minute and Schramm was running in on goal, but Myers calmly gathered the ball to end the threat. A free kick earned by the Eagles in the 16th minute led to a Brett Niebling header that went just high.
American finally got on the board in the 24th minute after earning a corner kick. Kuykendall served the ball into the box and Niebling headed it in towards the open net. However, Georgetown's David Eder saved the ball off the goal line. Albright gathered it and shot, but it was blocked to Philipakos who found the open net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The goal energized the Eagles and the 28th minute brought another opportunity for AU as Kuykendall took a free kick and sent it in to Salvatore Caccavale. Caccavale gathered the ball and shot on goal, but Hogan saved the ball. Two minutes later, Herman brought the ball into the box and slipped it across the box, but Georgetown was able to clear the ball. In the 34th minute, Caccavale one-touched the ball to Marut on the right side, but his shot hit the side of the net.
Georgetown netted the first goal of the second half in the 53rd minute. After an initial tackle by Koniver, Dan Gargan played the ball to Dan Pydo who chipped the ball into the box. Schramm was able to beat Myers in the lower right corner to tie the match at one. The 66th minute brought a good opportunity for AU as Kuykendall blocked a Hoya pass and Caccavale won the ball. He crossed the ball, but Hogan came out to gather the ball.
The Eagles had another great chance in the 67th minute as Koniver sent a long ball ahead to Herman. He gathered the ball in the box and fired a quick shot that went wide of the goal. In the 75th minute, Garth Juckem played a long ball into the box, but it went just beyond the run of Herman and over the end line. Georgetown had a chance in the 77th minute as Trevor Goodrich blasted a ball from the top of the box, but it went high.
The Hoyas had another great opportunity in the 79th minute as Schramm played a cross to Danny McAnally who attempted a side volley that went just wide of goal. American earned a corner kick in the 85th minute, but Albright's header was wide of the net. Georgetown had a free kick 25 yards out in the 86th minute, but American was able to clear the ball away. As the ball bounced around towards the goal, Georgetown's Dan Pydo slid in with both feet up and ran into Myers. Pydo was issued a red card and the Eagles earned a man advantage. However, American could not take advantage and the teams headed into overtime.
The 92nd minute had the first chance of overtime as John Fico played the ball ahead to Herman, but Herman's cross was cleared by Hogan. One minute later, Gordon Templeman played the ball ahead to Herman who carried the ball into the box, but his shot was saved. The Hoyas came on the counter, but Zaron was able to stop Daniel Grasso's run.
In the 95th minute, Zaron played the ball from 45 yards out into the box, but Kuykendall's header went high. Another chance came in the 99th minute as Herman played a great ball into the box, but it went just past Philipakos and Caccavale. American earned another corner kick in the 100th minute, but was unable to convert.
The Eagles kept the pressure up in the second overtime and earned the first shot in the 102nd minute, but Kuykendall's shot went wide. In the 109th minute the Eagles had a great opportunity as Herman made a move down the line and found Philipakos. Philipakos passed the ball to Fico, but his shot was saved and the match ended in a tie.
Both teams took 18 shots in the match, but Georgetown could not manage a shot in overtime. Myers posted three saves for AU and Hogan had three for the Hoyas. Georgetown was also aided by two team saves. AU held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Both teams won their first match of the tournament, causing the overall champion to go to the tiebreakers. Georgetown won the D.C. College Cup on goal differential. American's next match is Friday in the Maryland/adidas Classic against No. 14 Virginia. The match begins at 4 p.m.
