American Opens Season with Win Over Longwood

WASHINGTON - Sophomore Shannon Goans (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) scored the second goal of the game and assisted on the first, to give American University an early 2-0 lead over Longwood. The Eagles would go on to close out the Lancers, winning by the final score of 4-0. Goans fed senior Maureen Daniels (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) for the first goal of the game at 28:06 and just two minutes later Tiffany Carter (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School of Princeton) crossed the ball to Goans for the second goal of the first half. Senior Melissa Snyder (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) netted the third goal of the game for the Eagles at the 47:14 mark, while freshman Javiera Villagra (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) completed the scoring (65:39) with a shot from ten yards out. The Eagles dominated the game offensively with 23 shots to just four for the Lancers. Senior goalie Laura Miller (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown) stopped all four shots she faced in the second half to record her seventh career shutout. American is now 1-0-0 and will next play at Richmond on Friday, September 5 at 4:00 p.m. Game Summary
