WASHINGTON - Sophomore midfield Simone Konig's
(Gartringen, Germany/School of Economics in Boblingen) corner kick
in overtime sailed into the far corner of the net, propelling the
Eagles to a 2-1 victory and granting American right to host next
weekend's Patriot League Championship Tournament. American opend
the scoring in the 19th minute with a header by Christina Gonzalez
(Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central). Konig streaked down
the right side and crossed the ball to Gonzalez on the far side,
who then floated a header over the approaching goaltender into the
top right corner. Army knotted the score at one less than 14
minutes later, when Emily Cook snaked a pass through the middle of
the American defense and Jen Pascucci chipped it over the head of
goalkeeper Lauren Wohl (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air/Bucknell). Both teams
remained scoreless in the second stanza. American fired four shots
in the second half, compared with Army's three. The Eagles had 12
shots on the game and Army fired six. Just over four minutes into
overtime, Konig's corner kick from the left side curved to the far
post. Army goaltender Rebecca Garcia tipped the ball, but it was
not enough to prevent it from sneaking inside the right post. With
the win, American tied Navy for the Patriot League regular season
title, but earned the right to host the league tournament by virtue
of the Eagles' 5-4 regular season win over the Midshipmen. The
Patriot League Championship Tournament will be held on Reeves Field
on Friday, Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The championship game
will be held Nov. 9 at Reeves Field at 1 p.m. Scoring: AU -
