AU Edges James Madison by Goal, 2-1

October 8, 2003

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The AU Eagles were able to defeat the James Madison 2-1 in an intense game of hockey. The win extends their winning streak to eight. The Eagles overall record is now 9-1. Senior Laura Miller (Pennsburg, PA/Quakertown) and sophomore Caroline Vo (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) led the Eagles defensively. Miller finished with 10 saves. The intensity began as soon as the whistle blew, as the Eagles ran the ball into the Dukes circle for the first of seven penalty corners. The Dukes followed suit and mirrored the corner with one of their own. The first goal of the night was scored just 8:53 into the game by Javiera Villagra (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College). Villagra sent a high shot into the cage, after a rebound from a penalty corner. Although James Madison was able to tie the game just minutes later off of a penalty corner (12:52), Miller and the rest of the AU defense was able to keep the ball out of the cage for the remainder of the game. The second half of the game intensified, but the Eagles were able to take the lead when freshman Camila Infante (Santiago Chile/Santiago College) knocked the ball past the goalie. Infante scored after receiving a beautiful pass across the middle of the circle from teammate Shannon Goans (Ellicot City, Md./ River Hill ). As the second half continued, the teams played evenly, switching ends of the field minute by minute. With three minutes left, the pressure grew for the Eagles as the Dukes took three consecutive penalty corners; all which were saved masterfully by Miller. The Eagles will try and continue their winning streak, as they take on Patriot League rival Lehigh on Saturday at 12:00. The game will take place at UMBC. Game Summary:
