AU Shuts Out Fairfield for Second Win of Week, 5-0

October 4, 2003

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Despite the cold and the rain, the AU field hockey team was able to dominate the game against Fairfield, shutting them out with a 5-0 victory. The Eagles were able to keep the Stags out of their half of the field the entire game, only allowing them into the circle once during each half of the game. The Eagles were led to victory by junior standout Javiera Villagra (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College), who had a total of seven shots, and two goals. Villagra's first goal was unassisted just 8:53 into the game, while her second goal came minutes later off a penalty shot into the right corner of the net (23:51). As the first half continued, the Eagles were able to keep the Stag's out of their circle, only allowing one shot against senior goalkeeper Laura Miller (Pennsburg, PA/Quakertown). With only minutes to go in the first half the Eagles had the opportunity to elevate the score once again as Camila Infante (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) crossed the ball to freshman Kaitlin De Ttroia (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex Regional) for the third goal of the game. Unfortunately for the Stags, the Eagles weren't quite satisfied with just three goals in the first half, so with just 1:32 seconds to go, and the opportunity to score off a penalty corner, sophomore leader Maureen Daniel (Clifton, Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) slammed the ball past the Stags goalkeeper, with an assist from Shannon Goans (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill). The Eagles continued the second half of the game on the offensive, taking 12 penalty corners against the Stags. AU was able to keep Fairfield out of their circle, only allowing the Stags to enter one time. Fairfield did not get any shots against AU in the second half. The fifth and final goal was off a penalty corner, and was once again a strong shot from Daniel, with an assist from Goans with 8:04 left to play. AU field hockey is now 8-1, and 2-0 in Patriot League play, and will travel to James Madison University on Wednesday, October 8th to take on the Dukes. Game Summary:
