TOWSON, Md. - With two goals each, senior
Melissa Snyder (Gaithersburg, Md/Quince Orchard) and junior Javiera
Villagra (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) led the 19th ranked AU
field hockey team to a 5-0 shutout against Towson University.
Snyder and Villagra both lead the team with 11 goals this season.
The Eagles are now 12-2 overall, and first in the Patriot League
with a record of 4-0. Snyder started the scoring 21.09 into the
first half for the Eagles as she put the ball in the cage after
taking a shot off a rebound from the Towson goalkeeper's pads.
Camila Infante (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) had the assist,
her eighth of the season. Villagra quickly answered the first goal
with one of her own, just two minutes later as she scored a penalty
corner with the help of her teammate Maureen Daniel (Clifton Park,
Md./Shenendehowa). Daniel now has six assists for the season.
Villagra kept the Eagles intensity up as she masterfully dribbled
her way into the circle, through three defenders and found the back
of the cage for her second goal. Leaving the first half winning
3-0, the Eagles did not let up in the second half. Daniel started
things off by bring the ball up into the circle and passing it off
to teammate Heidi Hershberger (Davis, Calif./Davis) who quickly put
it in the cage to bump American's lead to four. This goal was
Hershberger's sixth goal of the season. With 10:29 left in the
game, the Eagles were able to elevate the score to 5-0 as Daniel
took a hard shot off a penalty corner and Snyder was able to finish
it off for her second goal of the night. The Eagles will return to
Patriot League play again on October 25 as they travel to Colgate
to take on the Raiders at 11 a.m. Game Summary:
