Washington, D.C. - Senior Steve Miles (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) and fellow senior Glenn Stokes (Silver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein) each scored 24 points to lead American University to a 81-75 victory over George Washington. For AU it snapped a nine-game losing streak to its' local rival. In fact, the last AU win over the Colonials was December 16, 1989.
For Miles the 24 points was a season-high and tied his career-high of 24 points scored against the College of Charleston last year. The second half is when Miles came alive, hitting on 6-of-8 shots and scoring 18 of his 24 points. He did not visit the free throw line until there were 11 seconds left in the game, but he iced the victory for AU by hitting on all four of his opportunities. In 34 minutes he collected four boards, three assists and a steal to go along with his offensive production.
Stokes has continued his torrid pace of late. With AU trailing by a point with 4:08 remaining, Stokes scored seven points in the next 75 seconds to give AU a two point lead. He added a steal, two rebounds and three assists to his totals for the night.
Matej Cresnik (Velenje, Slovenia/Univerza V Ljubljani), who did not start for the first time this season, came off the bench and hit what may be the biggest basket of the young Eagle season. After GW's Chris Monroe put GW up one point with 1:21 remaining Cresnik sank a three-pointer to give AU a 75-73 lead.with 1:04 left.
Andres Rodriguez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Louisville) once again turned in a standout performance for AU. He scored ten points on 3-of-5 shooting, dished out seven assists, stole a pair of passes and picked up a key charge in the last two minutes of the game.
As a team the Eagles had their second-best shooting game of the season. They converted on 29-of-54 attempts for a 53.7 percentage. They also had a season-high 12 treys and just 12 turnovers.
American (5-6) will next play at home versus St. Francis on January 4, 2003. The game is at 7:00 p.m.
