STORRS, Conn. - American University's men's soccer team lost its first match of the season as they fell to the host Huskies, 3-0, in the UConn/adidas Classic.
UConn (1-1) pressured the Eagles (2-1) early as William Thornton fired a shot that Michael Behonick was able to save. The Huskies then had another opportunity as Damani Ralph hit the post with a header. AU was not able to hold UConn off as Ralph broke free in the eighth minute and scored on a goal from the left side.
American started to put some pressure on the Huskies with Peter Philipakos firing a shot from just outside the box that UConn goalkeeper Adam Schuerman tipped wide. Andrew Herman took a shot from almost the same spot just moments later that also went wide.
Behonick kept the Eagles in the match in the first half, coming off of his mark three times to stop a Huskie breakaway. American played strong in the midfield until UConn's Anthony Curtis fournd Cesar Cuellar on a breakaway and Cuellar found the left corner of the net.
Early in the second half, the Eagles had one of their best chances of the game as Shawn Kuykendall passed the ball in to Herman in the box, but he was brought down by the Huskie defender, no foul was called, and the ball was cleared by Schuerman.
Behonick continued to impress in the second half as UConn had a free kick from outside the box in the 66th minute. Cuellar fired a shot from point-blank range that Behonick was able to turn away. Just one minute later, Philipakos shot a header on net that Schuerman dove to save. Later in the second half, Larry McDonald shot from 25 yards out that just went wide of the net.
Even though American outshot the Huskies in the second half 6-4, UConn put the game away in the 85th minute as Rui Fernandez stole the ball and beat Behonick on the lower right side of the goal.
Behonick finished the match with six saves. Schuerman made five saves for the Huskies. UConn outshot the Eagles 16-10 for the match.
American's next match will be on Sunday as American will play No. 9 Boston College in their final match in the UConn/adidas Classic.
