Bridgeport, Ct. - Senior Glenn Stokes (Silver Spring, Md./Tallahassee CC) tied his career-high of six three-pointers in a game, but it was not enough as the Stags of Fairfield held off a couple of late American runs. For the game, Stokes finished with 18 points, three rebounds and threee assists.
The game was tied at 23 apiece after the first 20 minutes, thanks in large part to the efforts of Matej Cresnik (Velenje, Sovenia/Univerza V Ljubljani), who had 11 first half points. He eventually finished with a career-high 15 points, and also chipped in with four rebounds, one block and was a perfect four-for-four from the free throw line.
The Eagles got off to a slow start in the second half and they were outscored 15-6 in the first seven minutes. AU finally made a run behind the shooting of Stokes, who nailed four of his six treys in the last 6:50 of the game. However, AU could never get any closer than seven over the last ten minutes.
Steve Miles (Alexandria, Va./Coastal Carolina) had a another solid effort for the Eagles. Despite sustaning a wrist injury early in the second half, he still managed nine points and nine rebounds in 33 minutes. For the weekend he had 28 points and 24 rebounds.
The Eagles were outrebounded by 18 (53-35) and struggled from the field. In fact, they shot better from behind the arc (31.4%) than from inside it (30.6%) and just 53.3% from the charity stripe.
American (3-5) is now off until Saturday when they will host Elon on December 22, 2002.
