PRINCETON, N.J. - After recovering from a 1-0 deficit in the opening minutes to establishing a 2-1 lead heading into the half, the No. 11 American University men's soccer team lost 3-2 to Princeton Wednesday night as Darren Spicer scored for the Tigers with five seconds left in the match.

The loss breaks a five-game winning streak for the Eagles, who are currently 10-3-0 overall and lead the Patriot League with a 3-0-0 record.

Princeton had a couple of early chances thanks to Spicer. In the fourth minute, Spicer fired a shot on American goalkeeper Michael Behonick that was saved. Just two minutes later, Spicer took another shot that Behonick was able to turn away. In the 14th minute, after a corner kick from Princeton, Jeff Hare crossed the ball to Adrian Melville who headed the ball over Behonick's outstretched hands to give Princeton a 1-0 advantage..

AU struck back quickly. In the 17th minute, Shawn Kuykendall struck a long ball into the box that bounced behind the Tiger defender. Andrew Herman collected the ball and scored in the lower left corner of the net for his eighth goal of the season.

After the teams battled in the midfield, American was awarded a free kick at the arc in the 30th minute after a foul on Melvin Espinal. Shawn Kuykendall took the kick and hooked it into the right corner of the net to give AU a 2-1 lead.

American had another opportunity just over three minutes later. Kris Kuykendall fed Michael Grinsfelder who centered the ball to Peter Philipakos, but a Princeton defender cleared the ball over the net. Princeton also had another chance before the half, but Rich Ryan's shot was cleared away by Shawn Kuykendall.

Just over one minute into the second half, Herman stole the ball from Princeton and fired a shot from just outside the box, but it was saved by the Princeton keeper. The Tigers came back down the field and Hare centered the ball to Matt Douglas who headed the ball into the net for the equalizer in the 49th minute.

From this point, most of the second half was played in the midfield with neither team having a good opportunity. AU had some good build-up in the 78th minute, but was unable to get a shot off and Princeton did the same thing two minutes later. A Princeton corner kick with 7:30 remaining was also cleared away by AU.

With just over five minutes left, Espinal fired a shot from 35 yards out that seemed to energize the AU attack. The Eagles had a couple of other chances in the remaining minutes including a shot by Grinsfelder that just missed the upper left corner of the net as the match appeared to be heading to overtime.

However, with time running down, Ryan brought the ball up the left side of the field and centered the ball to Spicer who was able to find the lower left corner of the goal and give Princeton the victory.

Behonick made five saves for the Eagles while Erik White saved two for Princeton. The Eagles were outshot by the Tigers 17-13 and also had 12 offsides compared to only one for Princeton.

AU returns to action at Reeves Field this Saturday as the Eagles face Holy Cross in a Patriot League showdown at 1:00 p.m.
