WASHINGTON, D.C. -- After playing over 100 minutes in grueling 90 degree heat, Matt Kopacka scored the game-winning goal in the first overtime to give American a 1-0 win over cross-town rival Georgetown in the first round of the D.C. College Cup.
With the win, the Eagles move on to face George Washington, an 8-1 winner over Howard in the other semifinal, in the championship game on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
American dominated the action for much of the contest, and outshot the Hoyas, 13-5. In the first half, the Eagles had two outstanding scoring chances, including a header from Adam Rosen which brushed just wide of the goal mouth.
After finishing regulation deadlocked at 0-0, Georgetown was the first team to make a serious run at a game-winner. A blast from forward xxxx went just wide of the left post.
American countered quickly with the game-winning run as Kris Bertsch collected a long ball from the back and carried it down the right flank. His centering ball to the middle of the box slid past a streaking Rosen, but landed right in front of an opportunistic Kopacka, who deposited it in the back of a wide-open net.
Keeper Michael Behonick made xxx saves in net for the Eagles, and was surrounded by outstanding defensive play from Bobby Brennan, Larry McDonald, Rosen, and freshman Charlie Koniver.
With today's win, American avenged a 1-0 loss to the Hoyas in the consolation round of last year's D.C. College Cup.
