WASHINGTON, DC -- Loyola's Graham Marchant collected a long lead pass, dribbled around American keeper Michael Behonick and put the ball in an open net to lift No. 13 Loyola to a 1-0 win over host American this afternoon.
The game was a hard-fought affair throughout, and each team had several excellent scoring opportunities in regulation. The teams combined for 27 shots in the game, with American taking 14 and Loyola 13.
American (4-4-0) had a great chance with about 10 minutes remaining in the game, when Bobby Brennan hit a ball from 20 yards out that hit squarely on the cross bar in the upper left corner, and came bounding back into play.
Loyola (7-1-1) had its chances too. John Farese, who assisted on the eventual game-winner, struck a left-footed shot that sailed just wide, and A.J. Ogilvie also had a brilliant chance late in the contest.
Both keepers were up to the challenge this afternoon, as American's Behonick made eight saves, while his counterpart, Loyola, Reb Beatty, made four stops.
After playing eight minutes of the initial overtime session, Loyola set up the scoring play from the backfield. A long lead was sent to Farese at midfield, who hit a streaking Marchant at the top of the box.
Marchant eluded an American defender, and then dribbled past Behonick, who had no choice but to come off his line. With a wide open goal, Marchant slipped the ball into the back of the net.
This was the third ranked team that American has faced this season, as it also played No. 3 Virginia and No. 5 Maryland earlier in the season. It was also the second overtime game of the season for the Eagles.
American returns to Patriot League action Sunday, Oct. 7, when they travel to Bucknell for a 1:00 p.m. match in Lewisburg, Pa.
