Athletics Gets Participation from Every Program in 2026 Campus Beautification Day

WASHINGTON - Student-athletes and coaches from every program in American University athletics took part in the annual tradition of American University's Campus Beautification Day on April 7. Groups from men's soccer, women's soccer, field hockey, cross country and track, volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball, wrestling, lacrosse, and swim & dive volunteered their time to help out all around campus.

The AU tradition, spearheaded by AU Facilities Management, the AU Arboretum and the AU Office of Sustainability, happens each April around Earth Day. Participants don the signature t-shirts, spread out and work to enhance the beauty and sustainability of AU’s grounds.

One of the most special parts about AU is its stunning natural beauty. Every morning as I exit my dorm, I am in awe of the vibrant plant life that surrounds me. I am so grateful that Campus Beautification Day gives us the opportunity to take part in caring for this place that brings us so much joy. By playing a tiny role in the up-keep of our campus, we feel even more connection to it and therefore can appreciate it more. We love AU, and we are honored to help maintain and build its beauty with our own hands.

Close to 200 of AU's student-athletes and coaches joined the campus-wide effort to improve the grounds as mid-Spring approaches and "New Eagle Day" brings more than 1,800 visitors to campus. Student-athletes got their hands dirty while spreading and raking mulch all over campus, digging holes, planting flowers, sorting waste, and painting spring images on glass.

Whenever we host recruits and their families, the campus is always beautiful. If they happen to visit in the spring, summer, or fall… our campus is truly vibrant. I always tell the recruits that they can take part in keeping this campus beautiful when they are a member of this team. It’s a little something extra for them to be proud of along their journey as student-athletes. Spring is in the air!
