Leete and Campos win EIWA Championships, Eight AU Wrestlers Place

WASHINGTON - At the end of a historic weekend for American University wrestling, Maximilian Leete and Caleb Campos became the program's first EIWA champions since 2012. Both wrestlers won their championship matches to go along with a program record eight total AU placewinners from the weekend, adding an exclamation point to American's first time ever hosting the tournament.

Notable
  • Leete won the 133-pound title in a thrilling overtime match against the #2 seed Ethan Berginc from Army. Berginc struck first by slipping out from under Leete and pulling off an impressive reversal in the second period, but Leete responded with two escapes to even the score.
  • With the 20 seconds left in what was a grueling overtime period, Leete wrapped Berginc in a headlock, pulled him down to the mat, and finished with a big throw to get him on his back for a takedown and four nearfall points. The highlight-reel move with short time brought a packed Bender Arena crowd to its feet, as the final seconds ticked off and Leete won the bout 9-2.
  • Campos handed James Conway just his second loss of the season, the #1 seed and fifth-ranked wrestler in the country. It was a composed match for Campos, who led the whole way and created the turning point in the second period.
  • Ahead 3-1, Conway elected to start on bottom and scored on an escape. After a pause from a potentially dangerous call, Campos exploded right off the whistle, getting a hold of Conway's right leg and taking him down just before he could scurry off the mat for a crucial three points.
  • Campos wrestled intelligently in the third period, not allowing any space for a clean shot from Conway. He scored off an escape and surrendered two stalling calls, taking the 8-5 win.
  • Of AU's six other wrestlers competing on Day 2, JJ Peace and Emmanuel Ulrich earned victories. Peace won the 125-pound seventh place match via pin of Bucknell's Kade Davidheiser, and Ulrich took the fifth place match at 285 via forfeit.
  • After losses on the day, Gage Owen finished in sixth at 149, and Jack Maida (141), Austin Craft (165), and Hunter Hohman (174) stood eighth on the podium. Eight total AU EIWA placewinners marks the most in program history.
