Lacrosse Falls to Pittsburgh 17-5

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The American University lacrosse team was defeated by #23 Pittsburgh on Wednesday afternoon on the road. AU trailed by three goals against one of the nation's top teams before a 54-minute rain delay stopped the game late in the first quarter, and the Panthers went on a 9-1 scoring run the rest of the way.

Notable
  • Caroline McBride had two points on the day, scoring a goal and dishing out an assist. She now has nine points on the season.
  • Kellie Linehan scored her 16th goal of the year, putting her just one goal behind Reagan Murdoch for the team lead. Shannon Silvius and Anastasia Byrnes scored the other two goals for American.
  • Sammie Buonaccorsi continues to be AU's most impactful defender, causing four turnovers and picking up five ground balls today. She leads the team in both categories, totaling 17 caused turnovers and 16 ground balls.
  • With the loss, AU falls to 1-6 on the season.
How it Happened
  • The Eagles played energetic lacrosse in the first quarter, sparked by a goal from Kellie Linehan that gave them a 1-0 lead just under three minutes in. McBride found her cutting to the center of the eight-meter, and she turned and beat Molly Cain to the bottom left corner.
  • AU put four shots on goal in the first frame, picked up five ground balls, and caused two turnovers. After a second goal from Aine Powers off a quality feed from Jasmine Connor, the Eagles trailed 3-2 at the end of one.
  • Avery Moon scored for the home side early in the second quarter, but Silvius responded for American off a free position chance to make it 4-3.
  • Continuing to trade goals, Moon scored again before Byrnes slid between two defenders inside the eight-meter and scored to bring AU back within one at the 5:23 mark.
  • The Panthers scored twice more to extend their lead to 7-4 before the rain delay stopped the game with 2:52 remaining in the first half.
  • After nearly an hour-long break, Avery Moon scored her fifth goal of the game with one second left in the quarter.
  • The second half was all Pitt, as the Panthers outscored the Eagles 7-0 in the third quarter to bust the game open. Caroline McBride scored the only goal of the half for AU in the fourth.
Up Next
