Lacrosse Drops Overtime Battle With Colgate, 11-10

WASHINGTON - The American University lacrosse team lost a back-and-forth battle with Colgate on Saturday afternoon, falling 11-10 in overtime in a game that was tied seven different times. Kellie Linehan's fifth goal of the day tied the score with just three seconds left in the fourth quarter, but Colgate struck first in the extra period to win the Patriot League opener.

Notable
  • Linehan's five goals brings her team-leading total to 21. She added an assist today as well, giving her 26 points on the year.
  • Reagan Murdoch scored twice to follow Linehan, while Annabelle Jackson, Anastasia Byrnes, and Caroline McBride tallied AU's other goals.
  • Izzy Masengarb had an excellent day on the defensive end for American, adding a career-high four draw controls to three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Deirdre Brown and Samantha Buonaccorsi each caused three turnovers behind her.
  • Overall, the Eagles caused 11 of Colgate's 12 turnovers and picked up 17 ground balls to the Raiders' 11.
  • Brooke Hill played her best game of the season in goal, stopping 14 of Colgate's 20 shots on target.
How it Happened
  • Linehan got into a groove early, scoring three of AU's four goals in the first quarter to help the Eagles stay level with the Raiders.
  • After Gracie DeSimone put Colgate up 1-0, Linehan responded with a free position conversion that came on a man-up chance for AU. Colgate's Ella Bishara and Katie Walsh scored back-to-back times, only to be answered by another free position tally from Annabelle Jackson at the 5:05 mark.
  • Linehan displayed her one-on-one ability on the next two goals, beating her defender from the top of the eight-meter to the left side for one, then mirroring the same dodge on the right side for the next.
  • American scored twice in the final minute of the second quarter, taking the lead and momentum into halftime. Anastasia Byrnes fired a left-handed shot to the far post for the first goal, then Caroline Howard won the following draw control to get the ball back for AU.
  • After head coach Lindsay Teeters called a timeout with 17 seconds on the clock Murdoch and Linehan worked a perfect pick-and-roll to score. Murdoch set the pick for her teammate, then finished off Linehan's feed with a scoop-shot to beat Maddie Stevens from close range. AU led 6-5 at the break.
  • The two teams split the third quarter with two goals apiece, beginning with a free position strike from Caroline McBride to extend American's lead. Bishara and Aubrey McMahon scored for Colgate to knot the score, then Murdoch put AU back in front with her second goal of the game. She threw a left-handed shot on goal from the left side of the eight-meter that was initially saved by Stevens, but it trickled over the goal line after she couldn't locate the ball.
  • After a scoreless start to the fourth quarter, Linehan found her fourth goal to give AU a 9-7 advantage. She used a pick from Shannon Silvius to find space on the right side and beat Stevens low.
  • With American in the driver's seat toward a win, McMahon responded with two goals in a row to tie the game 9-9 at the 5:30 mark. Just over two minutes later, Bishara netted a free position try to make it a 3-0 run and give Colgate a 10-9 lead.
  • With a 15-second difference between the shot and game clock, Colgate had the ball with just 1:41 remaining. After the Raiders ran the game clock down to 30 seconds, Aine Powers knocked the ball out of DeSimone's stick and picked up the ground ball to cause a crucial turnover. After AU cleared, Teeters called the team's final timeout with 15 seconds left.
  • Linehan's game-tying goal came off another pick from Murdoch, as she snuck in a tight-angle shot at the near post from the right side. With three seconds left, the game was tied 10-10.
  • Hill came up with four saves in the fourth quarter, including two free position denials.
  • The Raiders won the opening draw control in overtime, and Bishara drew a foul on Buonaccorsi on their first possession. On the ensuing free position chance, she beat Hill to the right side of the cage to win the game.
Up Next
  • American will travel to Lehigh on Friday, March 20 for a matchup with the Mountain Hawks. First draw is set for 3 p.m.
