Lacrosse Defeats Lehigh Behind Offensive Outburst, 19-15

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The American University lacrosse team scored a season-high 19 goals on the way to its first Patriot League victory of the season over Lehigh on Friday afternoon. While Reagan Murdoch found the back of the net five times to lead AU, eight different Eagles scored in the team's best offensive performance of the season and highest-scoring game since 2022.

  • Murdoch's five goals bring her total up to 24 on the year. She collected three draw controls as well.
  • Freshman Shannon Silvius scored a single-game career high four goals, while Adria Kotzian also reached a career high in points with five. She scored two goals and delivered three assists, bringing her team-leading total up to 11. In addition, sophomore Lauren Appleby scooped up a career-high five draw controls.
  • AU's five other scorers were Annabelle Jackson, Caroline McBride, Anastasia Byrnes, and Julia Pope
  • Aine Powers recorded three ground balls and a draw control, and Nickie Prendergast picked up three ground balls as well. Junior defender Samantha Buonoccarsi delivered her first career assist.
  • The Eagles took a season-high 34 shots, putting 24 on goal. They picked up 18 draw controls and tied a season-high in ground balls with 21.
  • AU outscored Lehigh 10-5 in the second half.
  • American is now 1-1 in Patriot League play and 2-7 overall.
How it Happened
  • AU fell behind 3-0 to start the game over the first three minutes, but held Lehigh close from that point forward.
  • Connor got the scoring started at the 10:06 mark, cutting to the middle of the eight-meter and finishing off a feed from Kellie Linehan behind goal. Two minutes later, Silvius fired a left-handed shot on the run to the back of the cage.
  • Murdoch provided the third goal of the frame, shaking off her defender with a turnaround shot to her right side just in front of goal. AU trailed 6-3 at the end of one.
  • The Eagles trailed 9-4 at the 8:39 mark of the second quarter after another Murdoch goal was answered by three tallies from Lehigh, but they broke through for five goals in the final four minutes of the half to tighten the gap.
  • Adria Kotzian started the offensive burst, beating Micaela Jennings to the short side on a man-up opportunity.
  • Less than a minute later, Silvius blew past her defender with a jab step and finished from just outside the crease. 48 seconds after that, Linehan found Murdoch wide open in front of goal for a simple finish.
  • Molly Snow scored for Lehigh before Silvius added another off a free position, then Linehan scored at the first half buzzer. In tight space, she snuck a shot inside the left post from the low left side with no time remaining. In just over four minutes, the Eagles had cut a five-goal deficit down to one.
  • The game remained close in the third quarter, with AU outscoring Lehigh 4-3 to make the score 13-13 going into the fourth. McBride netted her first of the day, followed by another strike from Linehan, and Kotzian's second. Buonaccorsi delivered a perfect lead pass to her loose in transition, and Kotzian scored on a one-on-one with Jennings.
  • American took control of the game in the fourth quarter, putting up another six-goal frame and holding the Mountain Hawks to just two.
  • The momentum shifted to the Eagles when they put together a highlight-reel goal at the 11:30 mark. Nickie Prendergast hustled to a ground ball and used a beautiful spin move to shake off a defender and get the ball up ahead to Linehan in the offensive zone. The senior dished to a cutting Pope on the left side, who punched a shot to the top right corner of the cage to give AU its first lead at 14-13.
  • From there, Byrnes and Murdoch added to the lead, Linehan contributed her final two goals of the day, and Silvius provided the exclamation point with 23 seconds left.
