Women's Basketball Falls to Lafayette on Senior Day

WASHINGTON –– The Eagles closed out their regular season of gameplay in Bender Arena with a midday battle against Lafayette. The Leopards took control of the game in the first frame on a starting run, and despite the American University women's basketball team closing in a few times, it wouldn't be enough to overcome the deficit created and AU fell 56-41 in Bender.

Inside the Box Score
  • Sophomore guards Madisyn Moore-Nicholson and Molly Driscoll were the offensive high points for American on the afternoon, each tallying nine points.
  • Freshman Charlotte Tuhy, with her 12 rebounds, led all players from both teams. Tuhy, with her season total rebounds at 288, is now second all-time at AU for rebounds in a single season with three regular season games remaining.
  • American was outshot, Lafayette finishing shooting 36.2 percent from the floor overall to AU's 27.3 percent.
  • The Eagles' 19 turnovers led to 21 points for the Leopards, and points in the paint–which helped the Eagles succeed in their win against Lafayette earlier this season, trended toward the visitors. AU picked up 14 points in the paint to Lafayette's 22.
  • Teresa Kiewiet led all player on the floor offensively with her 26 point outing, on 9-of-15 shooting. The junior went 6-of-6 from the free throw line and had eight rebounds.
How it Happened
  • Two early threes from Lafayette, as AU shot just 1-of-6 from the field to open, pushed the Leopards ahead 10-2 at the six-minute mark.
  • The Eagles continued to struggle, shooting 3-of-14 from the field through the first as Lafayette pushed on ahead, expanding their lead to 14, up 23-9, to close the first quarter.
  • As the second quarter opened up, the Eagles shoot 3-of-4, chipping down the lead, back eight while creating chances off three defensive steals as defense stepped up for the Eagles.
  • American closed the first half grinding back in the game and closing in the lead, shooting 45 percent in the second quarter compared to the Leopards 18 percent. American was down 10, 31-21, with a lot of ball left to be played.
  • American exploded out of the locker room, going on a 7-0 run and cutting the lead down to five, scoreline at 36-31 in the opening five minute of the second half.
  • Lafayette junior Kiewiet though, led a strong response for the visitors, scoring eight of the Leopards' 11 points in the third frame.
  • With 10 to play for, the Eagles struggled but stuck with it. With five to play, American was slipping offensively though, struggling to finish at the rim and going just 1-of-6 to open the final frame, down 51-39 to the 'Pards.
  • The visitors held off American, claiming the 56-41 victory over American in their final home game of the season.
