High Scoring Third Period Sees Bucknell Past Women’s Basketball

WASHINGTON –– The Eagles had the halftime lead in Bender Arena, but a 21-point third period from Bucknell was enough to carry the visitors to a 58-45 win over American women's basketball.

Inside the Box Score
  • Charlotte Tuhy finished the first half with 11 points and six rebounds before going on to finish with 17 points and 10 boards for the 12th double-double of her freshman season.
  • Tuhy, with 276 total rebounds on the season, is now second all-time at AU for rebounds in a single season with three regular season games remaining.
  • Molly Driscoll was the second highest points earner for AU with 11; the sophomore picked led AU with three assists and two steals.
  • Neither team had a strong showing from the bench, each team only picking up six from nonstarters. The teams were relatively even in scoring in the paint as well, with the Bison picking up 22 points and AU grabbing 20 down low.
  • Bucknell's Tuana Coskun tapped out on top, leading all players, with her 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting.
How it Happened
  • The forwards opened the game, a layup from Koepke and a three from Tuhy had the Eagles up 5-0 before a pair of free throws from Moore-Nicholson had it 7-0 before the Bison got on the board four minutes into the first.
  • Bucknell grinded back into the game and with 4:14 on the clock in the opening frame, the Bison led 11-9, with three three-point baskets carrying them over the Eagles.
  • Through the first ten minutes, no one on either squad had scored more than a single basket except for Rescifina who ended the period with a turnaround jumper. Bucknell led, thanks for five made threes, 13-11.
  • After another three point jumper from Tuhy and a layup from Koepke, the Eagles retook the lead on a 5-0 run and forced a Bucknell timeout at the midway point of the frame; AU was up 18-17.
  • The Bison were held to just seven points in the second period, going from shooting 41.7 percent in the opening frame to 18.8 percent in the second period. American led 23-20 at halftime.
  • Tuhy finished the first half leading all players with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting and six rebounds.
  • The Bison came charging back in the third period, opening on a 12-3 run before AU added four more from Tuhy and Driscoll.
  • With four and a half minutes remaining in the quarter though, the Bison were ahead by six, leading 36-30; Coskun had 11 points and Zemitis had nine. Tuhy was still leading everyone, on top with 15 points and seven rebounds.
  • Through three frames, Bucknell led by seven, up 41-34, thanks to a buzzer-beating three pointer from Isabella Casey, her second of the game. As a team, the Bison shot 52.9 percent in the third period, going 9-of-17 from the field overall and 3-of-5 from deep.
  • With three minutes to go, the Eagles were down seven, even on scoring in the fourth with Bucknell, each team picking up eight in the first seven minutes of the final frame.
  • American pulled out a full-court press strategy with two and a half minutes remaining, down 44-2, but the Bison held on to pick up with series sweep over the Eagles with a 58-45 road win.
