Leete and Campos Advance to Semifinals at Southern Scuffle, Five AU Wrestlers Move on to Day Two

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Both Maximilian Leete and Caleb Campos went 3-0 on day one of the Southern Scuffle to advance to the semifinals on the second and final day on Sunday, while JJ Peace, Raymond Lopez, and Emmanuel Ulrich qualified for day two through the consolation bracket. Leete led the impressive showing for AU , defeating three ranked wrestlers, including #15 Tyler Ferrara from Cornell.

Notable

  • Leete will face #9 Dom Serrano  of Northern Colorado in the 133-pound semifinals, and Campos will face #17 Aidan Brenot of NDSU in 184-pound semifinals.
  • Advancing to the consolation round of 8 #2 with a path to third place, Peace will face Utah Valley's #31 Bridger Ricks, Lopez will face Brett Ungar of Cornell, and Emmanuel Ulrich will face Arkansas Little Rock's Kaden Darwin. Peace and Lopez went 3-1 on day one, and Ulrich went 2-1. 
  • Leete commanded the round of 32 match against Tristan Daugherty of NDSU, holding a 5-2 lead in the third period and finishing him with a late takedown.
  • The graduate senior came from behind to pull off an overtime victory over Troy Hohman in the round of 16. He trailed 4-1 in the third period and scraped out an escape, then forced two stalling calls to tie the score at 4-4 with just 13 seconds remaining. 40 seconds into overtime, he took Hohman down for the win. 
  • Leete's third win of the day also required extra wrestling, as he pulled off the upset of the tournament so far by defeating #15 Tyler Ferrara in two rideout periods.
  • Behind Ferrara 5-4 in the third, Leete tied the score with an escape. He scored first in the opening rideout period, then started the second rideout on top and rode Ferrara for 25 seconds before Cornell's wrestler could scoren to seal the thrilling win. 
  • Campos took care of The Citadel's Brodie Porter in the round of 32, notching three takedowns en route to an 11-2 major decision.
  • Next, he put forth a comeback effort in the round of 16 against Cornell's Matt Furman. Trailing 7-3 in the second period, he tied the score with an escape and takedown. He stayed in control in the third, securing the only takedown of the frame and winning the match 12-8.
  • In the quarterfinals, Campos used a six-point third period to pull away from Utah Valley's #33 Caleb Uhlenhopp. After Campos' 6-3 lead was erased with an Uhlenhopp takedown, AU's wrestler responded with a reversal and four nearfall points. He tacked on one extra tally from riding time.
  • After falling to Caleb Weiand in the round of 32, #15 Raymond Lopez won three straight matches. 
  • He sparked his run when he erased a seven-point deficit in the third period against #29 Richard Murillo (CBU) in the cons of 16 #1, exploding for two escapes, a takedown, and four nearfall points just before the final buzzer to win the match 9-7.
  • Lopez won another tight bout 4-3 over Joey Fischer of Clarion, protecting a one-point lead after an escape in the third period. He dominated in the cons of 8 #1, pinning Colton Wade (Clarion) in 5:43 with a 16-3 lead.
  • Peace's only loss of the day came at the hands of #26 Cooper Flynn in the round of 16. He answered by coming out on top of a tight battle against The Citadel's Gylon Sims 5-4, then put up 21 points in a technical fall of Clarion's Easton Mull. 
  • Ulrich won two tight decisions to reach the quarterfinals, defeating Appalachian State's Stephan Monchery 4-1 in overtime,  then James Campbell of Michigan State 4-2. 
  • He came out on the losing end of overtime in his third match of the day, conceding a takedown from Duke's Connor Barket after the two were locked at 1-1 following three periods.
