Women’s Basketball Rallies in Fourth, Falls Short to Army

WASHINGTON – American women's basketball's three-game home winning streak comes to end after suffering defeat to the Army Black Knights in a hotly contested matchup in Bender Arena. Despite the Eagles leading periodically throughout the second and third quarter, the Black Knights took control of the game from there, creating a large enough lead to survive a late charge by American and claim the 63-56 victory.

Inside the Box Score
  • For the third time this season, sophomore Molly Driscoll eclipsed 20 points for the Eagles, scoring 20 to lead the squad. She also led the team in assists with four. Driscoll's 20 points tied with Camryn Tade to lead all players on the hardwood.
  • Freshman Charlotte Tuhy continues to dominate on the glass, securing 12 rebounds to lead the team.
  • Turnovers at the start of both halves led to significant point deficits for the Eagles: 10 of the team's 14 turnovers in the game came in quarters one and three.
  • American led three times throughout the game, including a one point lead at halftime, but trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half.
How it Happened
  • Coming out hot, the Eagles won the tip and the first possession resulted in a layup from Driscoll followed by two Army misses before the Black Knights got on the board as well.
  • The Eagles opened the second quarter scoring nine unanswered, starting with a contested layup by Sophomore Elizabeth Archer.
  • Also, part of that 9-0 run, less than a minute later, Driscoll made a backdoor cut to the basket and Tuhy fed her the ball for an and-one layup and three point play. With 6:34 left in the half, American was within two of Army at a score of 21-19.
  • With 3:22 left in the half, AU took their first lead of the game since 2-0 at 9:15 in the first with a three pointer from freshman Kayla Greyvensteyn to make the score 24-23.
  • After a three from Army, Driscoll countered with a three with her own to give her team a 27-26 lead at half, with the Eagles outscoring the Black Knights 17-9 in the second quarter.
  • Driscoll picked it up in the third right where she left off, giving the Eagles the lead back yet again at 30-29 with another three-pointer.
  • After several back and forth possessions, the Black Knights started to pull away late in the third quarter and early in the fourth, going on a 13-2 run over a span of nearly six minutes, extending the lead by as many as 17 points.
  • The Eagles nearly mounted a comeback after going on a 16-3 run through the middle of the fourth quarter.
  • Despite this, they fell just short with the final score being American 56, Army 63.
