HAMILTON, N.Y. –– Led by freshman
Ninthe Botman with a two goal brace, the Eagles of the American University field hockey team shut out Colgate 2-0 in a Patriot League battle on Saturday afternoon.
Quick Notables
- Botman, who hadn't scored since Duke (Aug. 31), tallied her third and fourth goals of the season in the first half. The freshman is tied for second on the squad with Jordan Reicher in goals on the season.
- American outshot Colgate 21-8 overall and 11-2 in shots on target. The Raiders though earned seven penalty corners to the Eagles' six.
- Pauline Gineste was only forced to make two saves on her way to the clean sheet. The defensive unit for American has allowed just one goal in the past three games.
How It Happened
It was Botman who put the Eagles on the board first. The freshman striker was the inserter on the penalty corner and was able to capitalize midway through the first period, putting AU up 1-nil early.
In the second period, with a little over two minutes to play before halftime,
Emilia Winkler sent a rocket toward the cage, but it was just wide, rebounding off the post. The rebound landed between Botman and the Colgate keeper Van Kempen and Botman quickly corralled the ball and notched herself another goal. The Eagles were up 2-nil at halftime.
The remainder of the game was uneventful scoring wise, despite American taking 12 shots in the second half, and Colgate earning five corners and taking five shots.
When the final buzzer sounded, American kept their clean sheet and claimed the 2-nil victory.
From Head Coach Jennings
"We were able to come away with another important road win today–we didn't always connect the way we would have liked, but we managed to create sustained pressure and opportunities. Ninthe did great to score two goals and Pauline led the way with another shutout.
"While we're happy with the win, it will be important for us to raise our level for our next home stand. We know the tests will only increase in difficulty."
Coming Up
The Eagles return to D.C. for a five-game homestead. For their first weekend back, they'll face off with Lafayette on Fri., Oct. 3 and then Villanova on Sun., Oct. 5. Lafayette is the only other undefeated team in Patriot League gameplay. American's game against Villanova will be their Pink Game for Cancer Awareness.
