WASHINGTON –– In a rematch of last season's Patriot League Championship game, three different goal scorers had the Eagles of the American University field hockey team soaring over Lafayette on Friday afternoon, downing the Leopards, 3-1, at Jacobs Complex.
Quick Notables
- Agustina Roffo and Jordan Reicher have once again gone goal-for-goal. In three of the last four games, both Roffo and Reicher have tallied a goal apiece. The pair now have 11 combined goals with Roffo tallying six and Reicher five, leading the team.
- Roffo also earned an assist on the final goal of the game, Reicher's. It's her second of the season. Lotti Süme and Mia Edwards each also earned an assist in the game.
- Sophomore Kendall Varty came in clutch with her first collegiate goal. The forward's goal ended up being the game-winner for American, the second of the game.
- Coming into the game, American and Lafayette were the only two teams undefeated in League play, American is now 3-0 and Lafayette is 2-1 in the Patriot League.
How It Happened
Only a single shot was recorded for either team in the first period, a high shot over the cage by Reicher with two minutes to play was all the excitement of the frame. Neither team earned a penalty either.
In the second, American scored off a penalty corner in the 26th minute, Roffo's redirect on a Süme shot putting the Eagles ahead 1-nil at the half. It's freshman Süme's second assist of the season.
Ten minutes later, in the 37th minute, the Eagles struck again, once again off a penalty corner. Varty was the inserter for the AU penalty corner and wasn't about to let the strike from Edwards get shoveled out by the Leopards defense, she redirected the shot and made it count. American led 2-nil.
The fourth period saw two goals, one from each team. First, the Eagles notched their third goal, this time from Reicher off an effort by Roffo to carry the ball the length of the field. Reicher chopped a backhand shot through the Lafayette defense to put American up 3-nil.
The Leopards would get a goal to prevent to shutout, in the 51st minute after forcing back-to-back penalty corners. Lafayette would earn four more corners in the fourth period, for six total, but would be unable to capitalize on any of them to make another dent in the AU lead. American would close out with a 3-1 victory.
From Head Coach Jennings
"I think we've been improving in our consistency each week and I think today was critical, and we were able to take care of business and that was able to put us in a good position.
"I thought our pressing was brilliant, especially in the first half. We really limited the danger. They had some flurries in the second half, Lafayette is a great team with a great coaching staff, so you know that they're going to come, but I thought a lot of the corners were repeat corners and we were a little bit sloppy on some details and to be fair, they stepped up another level.
"Overall, we did a brilliant job, with a couple areas to improve, but we'll try and keep it going."
Coming Up
The Eagles have returned to D.C. for a five-game homestead. For game number two of five, they'll battle Villanova on Sun., Oct. 5. The game against the Wildcats will be the squad's Pink Game for Cancer Awareness.
