WASHINGTON –– A brace from
Jordan Reicher and an additional goal from
Alyssa Freeman make it a five game win streak for the American University field hockey team. The Eagles ended the weekend 2-0 in gameplay with a 3-0 win over Villanova on Sunday.
Quick Notables
- Reicher scored the first two goals of the afternoon for AU and now leads the team outright in goals on the season with seven. She also has an assist and leads the team with 15 points.
- Freeman scored American's third goal of the day, her and her second of the season.
- Goalkeeper Pauline Gineste has now recorded four clean sheets, and the AU defense has allowed just two goals over a five-game stretch.
How It Happened
Reicher, picking up where she left off on Friday, scored early for American, notching the first goal in the seventh minute. A ball was sent into the circle by
Maddy Snyder. It was kicked away by the Wildcats keeper Sophie Volkel, but Reicher was there to backhand it back toward the cage, off the pad of the Volkel, and in.
In the 26th minute, Reicher got a steal in the Eagles' attacking third and bounced the ball toward the circle, attempting to lift the ball over a defender and Volkel. The lift, to her surprise, went into the cage for American's second goal of the afternoon.
The third goal for American came from a corner in the 37th minute. AU, as a result of the corner, had two quick shots saved in succession, but a third attempt from
Olivia Morraye was directed past the keeper and Freeman was able to put it on target and add to the damage.
In the final frame, Villanova pulled their goalkeeper with over nine minutes to play to add the advantage of an extra field player and play the remainder of the game with an empty cage. The strategy worked, and neither team earned a penalty corner nor recorded a shot in the final frame.
American would close out the weekend with a 3-0 win over Villanova.
From Head Coach Jennings
"I think we're playing hard, and it doesn't always come in waves, but because we're put ourselves in a good position we're getting better and more refined and starting to click. I'm very happy with the offensive production. The team has been playing consistent.
"You have to put pressure on the other teams, and sometimes it doesn't fall your way, but if you keep up the sustained pressure then ultimately you'll be able to get your chances and that was the story of today."
Coming Up
The Eagles have returned to D.C. for a five-game homestead. For game number three and four of five, they'll battle Towson midweek on Wed., Oct. 8 and on Sun., Oct. 12 they'll take on VCU. The fifth and final home game of this run will be on Fri., Oct. 17 against Bucknell.
