WASHINGTON - American University Athletics has announced the formation of its inaugural Faculty Athletics Advisory Council (FAAC), a cross-disciplinary body of faculty leaders dedicated to enhancing transparency, supporting academic integrity, and strengthening the connection between athletics and the university's broader academic mission.
The council will serve in an advisory capacity to the University President, Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR), and Director of Athletics & Recreation, offering guidance on policies and practices related to AU's NCAA Division I athletics program.
"American University is proud to support a holistic student experience that values both academic and athletic excellence," said President Jonathan Alger. "The creation of the Faculty Athletics Advisory Council reflects our commitment to shared governance, collaboration, and the continued success of our student-athletes—both in the classroom and in competition."
Chaired by Sarah Irvine Belson, Faculty Athletics Representative and professor in the School of Education, and Kevin Boyle, professor in the School of Public Affairs, the council includes faculty members from a wide range of academic units.
The FAAC's primary responsibilities include:
- Providing oversight and guidance on policies affecting student-athlete academic performance and well-being
- Reviewing compliance with NCAA, conference, and university regulations
- Supporting institutional efforts in maintaining academic integrity and promoting student-athlete success
- Facilitating communication between the faculty and the Department of Athletics
- Advising on long-term strategic planning for AU's athletics program
