WASHINGTON - American University is proud to congratulate alumnus David Aldridge (CAS-SOC/BA '87) on his induction into the 2025 class of the Washington Metro Basketball Hall of Fame. Aldridge joins a distinguished group of local basketball legends in recognition of his contributions to sports journalism, his advocacy for college basketball, and his longstanding support of AU's men's and women's basketball programs.
Aldridge's basketball journey began in D.C.—first as a standout student at DeMatha Catholic High School, then as a journalism and history major at American University, where he got his start with The Eagle, AU's student newspaper. His time at AU included serving as editor-in-chief of The Eagle and working in student media; those early experiences helped lay the foundation for a career in which he has become one of the most trusted voices in basketball coverage.
After his years at AU, Aldridge went on to report for The Washington Post, ESPN, Turner Sports, and other major outlets. He has covered high-stakes NBA moments, chronicled college athletics, and served as a senior columnist at The Athletic. Among his honors is the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame—one of the highest media recognitions in the sport.
Throughout his career, Aldridge has remained deeply connected to American University and its basketball programs. He frequently attends AU men's and women's games, and his support has meant a great deal to coaches, players, and fans alike.
Aldridge is part of a class of 10 inductees which also includes Kenny Carr, Randolph Childress, John Duren, Tracy Jackson, Jim Howell, John Hummer, Steve Turner, David Robinson, and Christy Winters-Scott.
