Roffo Scores in Double Overtime as Eagles Rally Past Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –– For the second game in three days, the Eagles of the American University field hockey team were led on offense by Jordan Reicher and Agustina Roffo on their way to a 2-1 double overtime victory over the Friars of Providence on Sunday afternoon.

Quick Notables
  • Reicher's goal came just fifteen seconds after the Friars took the lead to notch it all level. The junior now has four goals on the season.
  • Roffo is no stranger to game-winning goals. The graduate student tallied four game winners in the 2024 season and now leads the Eagles with five goals overall on the 2025 season.
  • The Eagles' defense held Providence to just two penalty corners in the entire contest, both coming in the final period.
How It Happened
Through the first 15 minutes of game play neither keeper was forced to make a save and after another fifteen, at the halftime break, only one save a piece was needed for Pauline Gineste and her Friars counterpart to keep the tally at nil-nil.

With sixteen seconds left to play in the third period, the Friars went ahead on a goal by Ari Ftorek. As the buzzer sounded to signal the end of the frame though, fifteen second later, Reicher responded for American, a solo goal rocketed into the back of the cage to level it back at 1-all.

Once the game was deadlocked again, the excitement settled and regulation finished with no clear winner, so the Eagles and the Friars locked in for overtime.

At the end of the first overtime period, the Eagles earned a corner that forced back-to-back acrobatic saves from Friars' keeper Ava Porter to keep the game level.

It was a pass from Reicher to Roffo as the pair crossed the midfield line into the attacking third. From there, Roffo drove into the circle, earned an advantage play, and shot it across goal for the golden goal, 2-1, victory.

From Head Coach Jennings
"We had an outstanding character test of a game today against a very tough Providence team," said head coach Steve Jennings postgame. "We showed great resilience to come back from a goal down and played with skill and heart all day.

"Auggie's goal in overtime was amazing, and the perfect punctuation mark on a weekend of positive momentum."

Coming Up
The Eagles will finish out September on the road. The squad only has one game next weekend, and will head up north to Hamilton, N.Y. to take on Colgate on Saturday, Sept. 27.
