Volleyball Closes Home Stand With 3-0 Sweep of UMES

WASHINGTON - It was another dominant day for the American University volleyball team, as the Eagles closed out a four-match home stand with a 3-0 sweep of UMES. AU hit .365 with 44 kills as a team, committing just nine errors to mark its most efficient match of the season so far.

Notable
  • Salme Adeele Hollas and Sophie Dufour continued to power AU on the pins, combining for 23 kills on the afternoon. The pair of outside hitters currently sit on the top side of the Patriot League leaderboard in kills, with Hollas in first and Dufour in third.
  • Bella Marrero took on 16 digs, dished out three assists, and the libero contributed a kill.
  • Setter Deniz Dakak added two kills and four digs to her 31 assists. With 177 total helpers on the year, she sits atop the Patriot League list.
  • Alex Ioannou had her way from the service area, totaling four aces. The freshman now has 14 on the year.
  • Up front, Prinzez Zeck, Carly Sciborski, and Elise Sterling combined for 18 kills, with each of them hitting over .330.
How it Happened
  • With the score 7-7 in the first set, AU went on a 9-0 run that was sparked by Ioannou's four service aces. Salme Adeele Hollas contributed two kills on the run, and Elise Sterling and Deniz Dakak put down one apiece to put AU in front 16-7.
  • The Eagles kept their foot on the gas from there, cruising to a 25-15 win and hitting .545 to start the afternoon.
  • Dufour led the way in the second set, logging six kills on the way to a 25-17 victory. With the score tied 12-12, American made a 13-6 run to close out the frame.
  • It was tighter third set, as the Hawks made a 6-2 to run early on to tie the score 11-11, and neither team led by more than two points from that point forward.
  • Tied 23-23, Dakak snuck a two-handed attack down to get AU to match point.
  • After a strong serve from Hollas forced Kary Melendez to play the ball over the net inadvertently, Zeck rose to it for a confident kill to seal the match for the Eagles.
