Field Hockey Drops to Penn at Terrapin Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. –– The Eagles of the American University field hockey team played Penn in its final game at Maryland's Terrapin Invitational on Sunday afternoon, falling 2-0 to the Quakers.

Quick Notables
  • American and Penn each earned six corners apiece. In shots, the Quakers held a 15-9 advantage and a 7-4 advantage in shots on frame.
How It Happened
Much like American's game on Friday evening, the opening block of the game against Penn was a scoreless affair. Each side registered two shots, but none of the four were on target.

Penn, on a shot in the 27th minute put the Quakers up 1-nil to force the Eagles to play from behind twice in the three days' time.

In the second half, Penn would double its lead, going up 2-nil in the 37th minute when Julia Ryan lifted the ball over an outstretched Pauline Gineste.

American, despite being level with Penn in shots (5) in the third quarter, was unable to get off a single shot in the fourth while Penn was strong offensively with four shots.

In the end, the Quakers' defense was too much for American to overcome to mount a comeback, and the Eagles fell, 2-nil.

From Head Coach Jennings
"Unfortunately, we did not step out on the field today with the AUFH mindset and it cost us," said head coach Steve Jennings. "Penn did a great job with their and danger in the circle and deserved the win.

"We need to regroup quickly and find a way to bring our 'A' game next weekend."

Coming Up
The Eagles remain out on the road until October. Next week, American will be up in New England, taking on the Boston U. Terriers in their first Patriot League game of the season on Friday, Sept. 19, and then face off with Providence on Sunday, Sept. 21.
