COLLEGE PARK, Md. –– The 13th-ranked Saint Joseph's held on for a 1-0 win over the American University field hockey team in the Terrapin Invitational at Maryland's Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex on Friday evening.
Quick Notables
- Alyssa Freeman was the sole Eagle to record a shot on target for AU in the contest.
- American earned five corners to three for the Hawks, while Saint Joseph's held a 7-6 advantage in shots on the night.
How It Happened
After an evenly matched first period, a majority of the second period followed suit. With time winding down in the opening half though, the Hawks of Saint Joseph's went ahead in the 29th minute, claiming the 1-nil halftime lead.
The third quarter was much of the same, the two teams evenly matched, each taking two shots, but neither team finding the back of the cage. Saint Joseph's still led, 1-nil, going into the final frame of play.
The Hawks would hold onto their lead, despite the Eagles taking two shots, one on target, and earning three penalty corners to SJU's one in the second half. The No. 13 team would hold out to claim the victory over American.
From Head Coach Jennings
"A great effort by the team tonight," said head coach
Steve Jennings on the night. "We were determined and played some brilliant hockey against a very talented Saint Joe's team. In the end, the difference was razor thin and we leave it with some important takeaways about where we need to go from here.
"We need to continue to grow and look forward to our next chance to compete on Sunday versus Penn."
Coming Up
The Eagles are on the road until October. Next week, they AU will be at back UMD in College Park for their Terrapin Invitational finale where they will be taking on Penn on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 3 p.m.
