Field Hockey Dominates in 10-Goal Season Opener

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. –– Eight goal scorers combined for 10 goals in American University field hockey's first game of the season, which saw the Eagles soar past the tribe, 10-nil on Friday night. Patriot League Preseason Midfielder of the Year, Agustina Roffo, showed her prowess when she scored a hat trick and notched an assist.

Quick Notables
  • Elle Ridge, junior midfielder, scored the Eagles' first goal of the 2025 season. The only other goal of the New Yorker's collegiate career came in a 1-nil win against Penn (Sept. 9, 2024).
  • Roffo's three goals and an assist had the midfielder seeing the most points she's earned in a single game (seven).
  • First years Ninthe Botman and Maura Read scored the first goals of their collegiate careers and classmate Maddy Snyder earned her first assist. The trio was joined by classmates Lotti Süme, a starter, and Jill DuVarney, Riley Clouse, and Sydney Huddleston for collegiate debuts.
  • Mia Edwards, a junior transfer from UC Davis made her first appearance in an Eagles' jersey.
How It Happened
American started out scoring and didn't stop. It was Ridge who grabbed the first goal on a perfect redirect on a sweeping shot from Sophie Willemse that resulted from an AU corner less than four minutes in.

Botman won the Eagles a penalty stroke, but Reicher's attempt was saved. Not two minutes later, under three minutes to go in the opening frame, Reicher was able to pull the keeper out of the cage before passing to Botman who slipped the ball into the goal to double the Eagles lead.

Heading into the second, American led 2-nil, but that wouldn't last long, as off another corner taken by Sarah Steinman, Roffo got the tip on a sweep from Willemse. The Eagles were up 3-0 with seven minutes to go before the break and were two-for-two on converting penalty corners.

With four minutes until halftime, Steinman–on a penalty stroke–added yet another to the Eagles' tally and the red, white, and blue were up 4-nil through two frames.

American scored twice in each of the first three frames. Roffo, with a solid shot from just inside the circle, blitzed it into the back of the cage on a solo attempt to make it 5-nil, and Emilia Winkler, off an assist from Olivia Morraye, made it 6-nil through three.

The fourth period saw four Eagles' goals, starting with an effort from Reicher, who redirected a long-shot pass from Roffo at an impossible angle to bypass the keeper and tally her first of the season. With less than ten minutes to play, Roffo scored her third goal followed closely at 55:43 with a goal from Alyssa Freeman. Freeman's goal saw freshman Snyder earn her first assist.

As time wound down, at 59:59, first year Read got in on the scoring action, taking advantage of a rebound from a Kylie Briggs shot attempt that couldn't be corralled by the Tribe, and made it an even 10-nil effort for American's first game of the 2025 campaign.

From Head Coach Jennings
"We had an incredible start to our season today–very proud of our passing, finishing, work rate, and spirit," said Steve Jennings. "We have been working hard throughout the preseason, and the team has really demonstrated a growth mindset which prepared us to have a performance like today.

"As always at this time of year, there is still so much to work on, and we need to continue to push in all areas. We are excited for another big test on Sunday."

Coming Up
The Eagles have a two game home stint, starting with No. 5 Duke on Sunday, August 31. Push back will be at 1 p.m. A week later, on Sunday, September 7, the Eagles will face off with the Dukes of JMU, also a 1 p.m. start.
