Local Rival Howard Visits Women's Soccer on Thursday at Reeves

WASHINGTON – In the third of five non-conference home games for American University women's soccer, the Eagles will host D.C. rival Howard at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28. AU will celebrate Pride Day and will look for its first win on the newly-renovated Reeves Field after a one-goal loss and a 1-1 tie so far.

Parking on Campus
  • As of August 25, parking on campus is being actively monitored seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

How to Get to Reeves Field
  • Due to ongoing construction of the adjacent Meltzer Center for Athletic Performance, entrance to Reeves Field for early-season home soccer contests will be at the south stairwell. 
  • From campus parking locations, please use the pedestrian walkway alongside the Media Production Center and enter by the President Kennedy speech marker and flagpole plaza.
Reeves Field & Greenberg Track Renovation Complete
  • Over the past eight months, Reeves Field and Greenberg Track, the home of American University's men's and women's soccer and cross country/track programs, underwent a $1.5 million renovation.
  • With a brand-new, bermudagrass surface, state-of-the-art irrigation and drainage systems, along with a new scoreboard, Reeves Field will now cement itself as one of the premier soccer facilities in the Washington, D.C., area. Greenberg Track has a new, high-caliber track surface installed to support the training of AU's varsity running student-athletes and benefit the entire university community.
  • With the construction of the Alan and Amy Meltzer Center for Athletic Performance also near completion, the forward progress of AU Athletics facilities ensures their major role in a bright future for the Eagles.

What to Know About American
  • After a full season away from their home field, the Eagles are looking for their first win on the newly-renovated Reeves Field after dropping a tight, 1-0 contest against GW and tying VCU 1-1 a week later.
  • Sophomore Nariah Goldman and graduate student Jennifer McGuire have both scored goals for the Eagles through three non-conference contests.
  • In her fifth season at the helm in 2024, head coach Marsha Harper led the Eagles to a 6-6-3 overall record—the program's most victories since 2019.
  • American went 4-1-1 in non-conference action last season, marking the best record since 1986. That start included a string of three straight victories, including a pair of 2-0 shutouts.
  • Team MVP honors went to sophomore defender Bella Vozar, who scored two goals and started in all 15 games.
  • Seniors Eliza Fisher and Avery Klingensmith both started in all of the Eagles' games in 2024, while grad student Jennifer McGuire and senior Phoebe Merrigan made 13 starts each.
  • American earned an impressive total of nine Patriot League Weekly Awards last year, led by freshman Addison Roemer who was named Goalkeeper of the Week twice and Rookie of the Week once. Roemer started in all 14 games played, making 39 saves and finishing with a record of 6-4-2.
What to Know About Howard
  • Howard is coming off a historic season in which the Bison, in just their fourth full season in the NEC (Northeast Conference), captured both the conference regular season and conference tournament championships, earning an NCAA Tournament bid.
  • Several players received major awards, and Brent Leiba was named NEC Coach of the Year.
  • NEC Midfielder of the Year Samantha James is back, as is NEC Rookie of the Year Gabriella Garcia-Terrell and NEC Goalkeeper of the Year Trinity Knox. 
  • James led the team in scoring last season with 15 points. Garcia-Terrell totaled 13 points, leading the team with 30 shots on goal, including three-game winners.
  • This year, the Bison are 1-2-0 so far, beating Hampton 4-1 but falling 2-0 against North Florida and 1-0 at Alabama A&M.
  • Garcia-Terrell has two goals to lead Howard so far, and Knox has made 14 saves in playing the majority of minutes in goal.
