Owusu Sekyere Joins Women's Soccer Staff as an Assistant Coach

WASHINGTON - Bringing more than 10 years of experience on the sidelines, Owusu Sekyere has joined head coach Marsha Harper's women's soccer staff as an assistant coach starting in the 2025 season. Sekyere most recently served as head coach for the Richmond Ivy of the USL W League.

"I couldn't be more excited to officially welcome Fred Owusu Sekyere to our coaching staff," said Harper. "Owusu brings a powerfully dynamic mix of experience, energy, and humility that has already made a real impact on our team. He has been on my shortlist for a long time. His passion for player development, intricate technical acumen, and calm presence make him an incredible asset to our culture and our mission. Owusu is well-versed, deeply committed, and fully aligned with the vision we have established for this program. I know he's ready to help us continue to chase history here at AU, and I'm humbled to have him on this journey with us."

Prior to coaching the Richmond Ivy through the 2025 season, Sekyere served as a volunteer assistant coach at VCU—his alma mater—from 2021-22 before he went to George Mason as an assistant for the 2023 season. In 2024, he returned to VCU as a full-time assistant before taking over as their interim head coach for the rest of the season.

"I am excited to join Marsha and her talented team," said Sekyere. "This is a great opportunity for me to support her vision and contribute to the program she has built here. I am ready to get started and help further the team's success both on and off the field."

VCU won the program's first Atlantic 10 regular season championship in Sekyere's first season on staff in 2021 and tied a school record with nine straight wins and a 13-4-0 record. In his second season, VCU earned a spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament with an 8-3-8 record.

Sekyere served as the Director of Technical Development and Camps for the Richmond Kickers Youth from 2020 to 2023, focusing on enhancing players' technical skills and overseeing camp programs. Since then, he has also worked with Richmond United. Before coaching, Sekyere played collegiate and professional soccer, serving first as a standout midfielder at VCU from 2006-09. He made 63 appearances, scoring 12 goals, and providing 15 assists.

After college, he played for NPSL club RVA FC in 2013. In 2014, he signed with the Charlotte Eagles of the USL Pro, making 28 appearances. He then joined the Richmond Kickers in 2015, where he played until 2018, amassing 96 appearances and four goals.
