Owusu Sekyere

Owusu Sekyere brings over a decade of coaching experience to his role as an assistant coach on Marsha Harper's women's soccer staff, starting with the 2025 season. Before this position, he served as the head coach for the Richmond Ivy in the USL W League. Sekyere holds a USSF B Coaching License, highlighting his dedication to coaching excellence and player development.

Prior to joining the Richmond Ivy, Sekyere was a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), from 2021 to 2022. He then advanced to become an assistant coach at George Mason University for the 2023 season. In 2024, Sekyere returned to VCU as a full-time assistant coach.

During Sekyere's first season on staff in 2021, VCU achieved a historic milestone by winning its first Atlantic 10 regular-season championship. The team tied a school record with nine consecutive wins and ended the season with an impressive 13-4-0 record, demonstrating the positive impact of his coaching abilities. In his second season, Sekyere contributed to the team's success as they earned a spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, finishing with a commendable 8-3-8 record.

Sekyere has served as a youth coach in a variety of roles over the past decade. Most recently, he was head coach for the Richmond United 2011 Boys ECNL team that advanced to the National Championship playoffs. From 2020 to 2023, Sekyere served as the Director of Technical Development and Camps for the Richmond Kickers Youth program, where he focused on enhancing players’ technical skills and overseeing various camp programs designed to nurture young talent. 

Before starting his coaching career, Sekyere was a distinguished collegiate and professional soccer player. He was a standout four year starter at midfielder for VCU from 2006 to 2009, making 63 appearances, scoring 12 goals, and providing 15 assists. After completing his collegiate career, he signed his first professional contract with the Charlotte Eagles of the USL Pro in 2014, making 28 appearances. He then joined the USL Championship side the Richmond Kickers from 2015 to 2018, where he made 96 appearances and scored four goals. His extensive playing experience greatly informs his coaching philosophy and approach to player development.
