American University Joins the 2025 Common Ground Experience

WASHINGTON - "Be brave enough to start a conversation that matters." This guiding principle will lead American University's participation in the 2025 NCAA Common Ground Experience, an initiative designed to promote inclusivity in college athletics.

AU is proud to be among the handful institutions selected to take part in this transformative program, with a distinguished cohort representing the university: Dr. Nkenge Friday (Vice President for Inclusive Excellence), Eric Doolittle (University Chaplain & Director), Erin Saunders (Director, Student-Athlete Support), Colin Jue (AU Eagles Swim Team member), and Patty Medina (Associate Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Development and Inclusive Excellence).

The team will travel to the NCAA Headquarters in Indianapolis for a week-long immersive experience, joining other institutions in meaningful dialogue on fostering inclusivity within collegiate athletics. The Common Ground program, established in 2014, is committed to creating an environment that is welcoming and respectful for individuals of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and faith perspectives. The initiative does not seek to change individual beliefs but rather to build bridges through open dialogue, mutual respect, and empathy.

Through interactive discussions, workshops, and small group exercises, participants will address institutional and personal biases, explore strategies to support student-athletes of diverse backgrounds, and collaborate on ways to create a more inclusive campus environment. The NCAA's leadership team and program facilitators will guide conversations on navigating the complexities of today's sociocultural climate while upholding institutional values and student needs.

"American University is honored to be part of the 2025 Common Ground Experience," said Patty Medina. "This program provides a unique opportunity for us to engage in important conversations, challenge ourselves, and develop actionable steps to enhance inclusivity on our campus. By bringing together diverse perspectives, we can create a more supportive environment for all student-athletes."

The 2025 Common Ground Experience emphasizes the importance of taking these conversations beyond Indianapolis. Participants will return to their campuses with newfound perspectives and concrete plans to implement meaningful change. AU's team is committed to translating these insights into action, ensuring that student-athletes and the broader university community benefit from an environment of understanding, respect, and inclusivity.

The work of Common Ground does not end with the conference—it is a continuous effort to build a culture where differences are acknowledged, respected, and embraced. As American University prepares for this journey, the message remains clear: meaningful change begins with courageous conversations.
