BOSTON – It was the first years of the American University women's basketball team that shined in Boston, but the efforts of
Elizabeth Archer,
Cecilia Kay, and
Molly Driscoll wouldn't be enough to turn the tides toward AU. The Terriers of Boston University would claim the victory 82-72 over American. In the contest, AU made 14 three-pointers, a single-game program record.
Inside the Box Score
- Archer demolished her previous career high and set a new one 17 points. The freshman forward went 3-of-5 from three point range and collected five rebounds.
- Classmate and fellow forward Kay had a late start to scoring, but she improved on the game to tally 13 points. She matched Archer to lead American with five rebounds.
- Driscoll was third Eagle that hit double-digit scoring with her 12 points. The forward stuffed her stat line with three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Another notable performance for AU was Laura Nogues' 3-of-4 shooting from three point range.
- Boston University was led offensively by three players, topped by Anete Adler with her 24 points. She was only player on the hardwood to top 20 points on the afternoon. Adler shot a remarkable 10-of-11 during the outing. Alex Giannaros (18) and Aoibhe (14) were the other two Terriers in double digits. Giannaros carrier the team from distance, going 6-of-10 from three.
- The Terriers shot 52 from the floor overall while American went 38 on the afternoon. The Eagles shot 39 percent from three point range though, draining 14 three pointers, an AU program record. The previous high was 13, hit twice, most recently against Army in 2019.
How it Happened
- The contest started evenly, and despite the back-and-forth, the game began on the slow side offensively for both teams, the score 7-all at 4:32 mark of the first period.
- BU turned up the pressure early and forced American to burn a timeout when, but coming out of it, Nogues drained a quick three pointer–her second of the game–followed not long after by a triple from Koepke.
- The Terriers improved to shoot 50 percent in the first period, leading the Eagles 20-13. Each team had taken 16 shots, but while the Terriers sank eight, American only managed five. On the plus side, three of AU's five were from beyond the arc.
- On an 10-0 scoring run, and up 26-13 with 7:43 to go in the half, the Terriers kept American off the board for four minutes before AU called a timeout to try and turn the tides. BU's Adler had nine points while Bentley had six. Nogues had six points at the time.
- It would be a Lexi Salazar triple to break the scoring drought of American, but BU's run would extend to 19-5 and American would burn another timeout in the first half to try and course correct with 5:02 to play for halftime.
- The final shot of the half would belong to AU's Driscoll, her first basket of the afternoon, drained with 22 seconds to go before the American defense held out and the Eagles ended the half down a dime, 40-30.
- American opened on a 9-5 run in the third period and forced a BU timeout. Driscoll, Archer, and Anna Rescifina draining a three pointer apiece on the run. Archer was the first Eagle to hit double digits on the afternoon while three Terriers had already hit that mark.
- Archer hit her third three of the game, 3-of-5 at that time from deep and the Eagles were down 52-46 with 5:16 to go in the third period, reducing the deficit to just six for AU to come back from.
- Adler wasn't going away though, leading the Terriers with 19 on 8-of-9 shooting and keeping the Eagles at bay as they tried to grind back into it and extending the lead back to double digits, Boston U up 11 with 1:45 to play in the third quarter.
- BU was leading 65-52 heading into the fourth. The Eagles dropped 22 points in the third quarter, improving from 33 percent shooting in the first half to shoot 44 percent in the third period. BU had gone 50 percent from the floor in the first half though and improved up to 61.5 percent in the third, dropping 25 points in the period.
- Giannaros would hit two threes back-to-back for the Terriers, improving to 6-of-10 from beyond the arc, and pushing up to 18 points, keeping the Eagles from closing the gap with 7:17 to go, Boston U led by 71-55.
- It was a back and forth, American pressing full court as time closed in on the final horn. Bailey Garbee led American over the last seven minutes with five points. Driscoll, Kay, Nogues, and Madisyn Moore-Nicholson each tallied three.
- In the quarter, the Eagles topped the Terriers 20-17, and held BU to their lowest shooting percentage of 46 percent, but American wouldn't be able to complete the comeback and fell 82-72 with a final BU free throw icing it.
